Polynomial bounds for automorphisms groups of foliations

From MaRDI portal

Abstract: Let (X,mathcalF) be a foliated surface and G a finite group of automorphisms of X that preserves mathcalF. We investigate invariant loci for G and obtain upper bounds for its order that depends polynomially on the Chern numbers of X and mathcalF. As a consequence, we estimate the order of the automorphism group of some foliations under mild restrictions. We obtain an optimal bound for foliations on the projective plane which is attained by the automorphism groups of the Jouanolou's foliations.

The authors consider couples $(X,\mathcal{F})$, where $X$ is a smooth compact complex surface and $\mathcal{F}$ a foliation. They give bounds (which are polynomial in the Chern classes of $X$ and $\mathcal{F}$) for the order of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(\mathcal{F})$ in several distinct cases. They use techniques that explore the Aut$(\mathcal{F})$-invariant loci to bound its order, such as reducing to an abelian subgroup and finding appropriate invariant divisors on the surface where numerical data of the group and the foliation can be measured. They estimate the order of the automorphism group of some foliations under mild restrictions and obtain an optimal bound for foliations on the projective plane which is attained by the automorphism groups of the Jouanolou's foliations.
