Prenormal categories

The author's abstract says: ``In this paper we introduce the notion of (pointed) \textit{prenormal category}, modelled after regular categories, but with the key notions of coequaliser and kernel pair replaced by those of cokernel and kernel. This framework provides a natural setting for extending certain classical results in algebra. We study the fundamental properties of prenormal categories, including a characterisation in terms of a factorisation system involving normal epimorphisms, and a categorical version of Noether's so-called `third isomorphism theorem'. We also present a range of examples, with the category of commutative monoids constituting a central one. In the second part of the paper we extend prenormality and its related properties to the non-pointed context, using kernels and cokernels defined relative to a distinguished class of trivial objects.\N\NHere, a pointed category is said to be prenormal if has finite limits and cokernels, and has pullback stable normal epimorphisms. In addition, the authors give three equivalent forms of this definition in terms of pullback stable factorization systems, involving either normal epimorphisms, or morphisms with trivial kernels (playing the role of `monomorphisms'), or both. Then, a number of useful propositions, where the proofs being similar to what is known in slightly different contexts are omitted. Not only nice examples, but also nice counter-examples distinguishing prenormal categories from other types of categories are given. Non-pointed counterparts of all main results are also presented. Futhermore, the paper has a story of a more general notion of semi-prenormality.
