Primal and inverse problems for elastic block structures
In mathematical modeling of large-scale geodynamic phenomena, the key question is defining elastic and rheologic characteristic of blocks, plates, and interblock layers (faults) of the Earth's crust and the lithosphere, which determine the course of geodynamic processes. They cannot be derived from experimental data on specimens because of the scale effects of space and time. In view of this, we formulated and solved the inverse problem of geodynamics: we constructed a geodynamic scheme and estimated the characteristics from observations of the behaviour of a geological system. In the present paper we pose and investigate primal and inverse problems for a schematized block structure of the Earth's crust in the case of plane deformation.
