Projective structures on curves and conformal geometry

From MaRDI portal

The authors start by explaining how projective structures on curves appear naturally in many areas of mathematics, from extrinsic conformal geometry to analysis, where the main problem is to find qualitative information about the solutions of Hill equations. One of their goals is to describe in detail the correspondence between different equivalent definitions of projective structures and their isomorphism classes. With their differential-geometric approach, they situate the notion of projective structure in a broader context which allows them to clarify several points in the theory. In doing so, they correct long-standing inexactitudes in the literature. In particular, in dimension one, they point out some flaws in [\textit{N. H. Kuiper}, Mich. Math. J. 2, 95--97 (1954; Zbl 0058.16103)].\N\NThe authors declare that their study is motivated by the existence of several structures induced on a curve embedded in a conformal manifold by the conformal structure of the ambient space. Furthermore, every such curve carries special parametrizations, for which the conformal acceleration vanishes, and a canonically induced Laplace structure, two notions which the authors show to be strongly related. They note that the induced Laplace structure on a curve in a conformal/Möbius ambient space is a particular case of the conformal Laplacian, or Yamabe operator, that is, a second order linear differential operator on a weight bundle with symbol equal to the conformal contraction and with vanishing first order term determined by the conformal structure alone. As an application of this study, the authors give a negative answer to the so-called Yamabe problem for curves in a conformal/Möbius ambient space.\N\NFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1569.53003].
