The dimension of hyperspaces of certain 2-dimensional continua

It is well known that if X is a continuum with dim \(X\geq 3\), then the hyperspace C(X) of subcontinua of X is infinite dimensional. We show that if X is a 2-dimensional continuum and rank Ȟ\({}^ 1(X)<\infty\), then C(X) is infinite dimensional. As a corollary, if X is a 2-dimensional FANR, then C(X) is infinite dimensional. Also, if X is a continuum with dim \(X\geq 2\), there is some \(A\in C(X)\) with rank Ȟ\({}^ 1(X)=\infty\).
