Der Autor stellt der technisch orientierten Art des Denkens (``technisches Denken) ein anschauungs- bzw. analyseorientiertes Denken (``vortechnisches Denken) gegenüber. In der Arithmetik hat sich der Wandel zwischen diesen Auffassungen im Mittelalter ergeben, als die Zahl vom technischen Denken erfaßt wurde. Wesentlich sind in diesem Zusammenhang vor allem die Euklidbearbeitung des Campanus und die Schriften des Jordanus Nemorarius im 13. Jahrhundert. Der Autor sieht Parallelen zu den sozialhistorischen Entwicklungen dieser Zeit.
