Chaotic and deterministic behaviour of nonlinear geophysical fluid dynamics systems

Examples of ODE's derived from fluid dynamics PDE's are reviewed. Examples, among them the Lorenz equations, are chosen to represent both chaotic and non-chaotic behaviour. A procedure for selecting the best dimension for accurate approximation of PDE's by ODE's is presented.
