\textit{M. Takeuchi} and the author constructed matrix bialgebras \(B_ \lambda\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not two, for \(\lambda^ 2 \neq 0\), \(\pm 1\), and developed their representation theory [Hokkaido Math. J. 21, 405-419 (1992; Zbl 0763.17017)]. In particular, \(B_ \lambda\) is cosemisimple if \(\lambda\) is not a root of 1. In the paper under review, the author constructs a Hopf algebra \(H_ \lambda\), which roughly speaking, is generated by \(x_{ij}\), \(1\leq i,j\leq 2\), where \(x_{ij}\) generate \(B_ \lambda\) with certain relations, and \(S(x_{ij})\), \(S\) the antipode of \(H_ \lambda\), with additional relations involving the \(S(x_{ij})\) and the \(x_{ij}\). Representation theory of \(H_ \lambda\) is similar to that of \(B_ \lambda\). All simple \(H_ \lambda\)-modules and comodules have dimension 1 or 2. However, \(H_ \lambda\) is not cosemisimple. The bialgebra pairing \(B_ \lambda \times B_ \mu\to k\) extends for the \(H_ \lambda\), and is used to give a braid structure on the category of comodules over \(H_ \lambda\). Finally, the author shows that \(B_ \lambda\) and \(H_ \lambda\) could also be constructed from a Yang-Baxter operator, if \(\lambda\) is not a root of 1.
