Abstract: For any ring R, the Auslander-Gruson-Jensen functor is the exact contravariant functor extsf{D}_A: extsf{fp}( extsf{Mod}(R), extsf{Ab})longrightarrow( extsf{mod}(R^{op}), extsf{Ab}) sending representable functors (X,hspace0.05cmunderlinehspace0.1cm) to tensor functors Xotimeshspace0.05cmunderlinehspace0.1cm. We show that this functor admits a fully faithful left adjoint extsfDL and a fully faithful right adjoint extsfDR. The left adjoint extsf{D}_L:( extsf{mod}(R^{op}), extsf{Ab})longrightarrow extsf{fp}( extsf{Mod}(R), extsf{Ab}) induces an equivalence of categories frac{ extsf{fp}( extsf{Mod}(R), extsf{Ab})}{{F | extsf{D}_A F=0}}cong( extsf{mod}(R^{op}), extsf{Ab})^{op} where F|extsfDAF=0 is the Serre subcategory of extsffp(extsfMod(R),extsfAb) consisting of all functors F arising from pure exact sequences. As a result, the functor extsfDA is seen to be a Serre localization functor. The right adjoint extsf{D}_R:( extsf{mod}(R^{op}), extsf{Ab})longrightarrow extsf{fp}( extsf{Mod}(R), extsf{Ab}) together with extsfDA restricts to the well known Auslander-Gruson-Jensen duality.
