Die Arbeit enthält einen Überblick über Resultate bis 1994, welche endlichen Gruppen \(G\) frei auf \(S^3\) operieren. Es wird insbesondere ein Resultat des Autors ausgeführt, wie Reidemeisters Verfahren, die originale und die duale Zellteilung der Quotientenmannigfaltigkeit \(S^3/G\) gemeinsam zu betrachten, zum Ausschluß gewisser nichtabelscher Gruppen \(G\) führt. Inzwischen (1996) haben I. Hambleton und R. Lee einen Beweis angekündigt, daß nur diejenigen \(G\) in Frage kommen, welche Seifert und Threlfall für lineare Operationen angegeben haben.
