The family of \(\beta\)-elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres \(\pi_*(S^0)\) localized at a prime greater than three was defined by \textit{L. Smith} [Am. J. Math. 99, 418-436 (1977; Zbl 0389.55017)] and by \textit{H. Toda} [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 11, 197-251 (1971; Zbl 0228.55015)]. Let \(L_2\) denote the Bousfield localization functor with respect to the spectrum \(E(2)\) with \(E(2)_* = Z_{(p)} [v_1, v_2, v_2^{-1}]\). The author proves that in \(\pi_* (L_2S^0)\) \(\beta_s \beta_{tp/p} =0\) if and only if \(p|st\) or \(s= rp+1\) with \(p^{n+1} |r+ t+p^n\) for some integers \(r,n\geq 0\).
