A short history of Newton's method
History of mathematics in the 17th century (01A45) History of numerical analysis (65-03) Numerical computation of solutions to single equations (65H05) Numerical computation of solutions to systems of equations (65H10) Numerical solutions to equations with nonlinear operators (65J15) Numerical methods for mathematical programming, optimization and variational techniques (65K99)
The author gives some remarks on Newton's method. After a short historical discussion he proposes to speak about Newton-Raphson method in the case of scalar equations and about Newton-Simpson method in the case of general equations. However there are no original papers of J. Raphson and T. Simpson cited in the references.
