Abstract: Let be a simple Lie algebra, a Levi subalgebra, and the Casimir element defined via the restriction of the Killing form on to . We study -eigenvalues in and related -modules. Without loss of generality, one may assume that is a maximal Levi. Then is equipped with the natural -grading such that and is a simple -module for . We give explicit formulae for the -eigenvalues in each , , and relate eigenvalues of in to the dimensions of abelian subspaces of . We also prove that if is abelian, whereas is not, then . Moreover, if , then has an abelian complement. The -gradings of height are closely related to involutions of , and we provide a connection of our theory to (an extension of) the "strange formula" of Freudenthal-de Vries.
