Abstract: We consider Gabor frames with translation parameter , modulation parameter and a window function supported on and non-zero on for and . The set of all dual windows with sufficiently small support is parametrized by -periodic measurable functions . Each dual window is given explicitly in terms of the function in such a way that desirable properties (e.g., symmetry, boundedness and smoothness) of are directly linked to . We derive easily verifiable conditions on the function that guarantee, in fact, characterize, compactly supported dual windows with the same smoothness, i.e., . The construction of dual windows is valid for all values of the smoothness index and for all values of the modulation parameter ; since , this allows for arbitrarily small redundancy . We show that the smoothness of is optimal, i.e., if then, in general, a dual window in does not exist.
