Abstract: In this paper we study the relationship of hyperbolicity and (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in the context of Riemannian manifolds and graphs. We characterize the hyperbolic manifolds and graphs (with bounded local geometry) verifying this isoperimetric inequality, in terms of their Gromov boundary improving similar results from a previous work. In particular, we prove that having a pole is a necessary condition and, therefore, it can be removed as hypothesis.

The authors show that having a pole is a necessary condition for a Gromov hyperbolic uniform graph. It is also essential for a complete Riemannian manifold with bounded local geometry which satisfies Gromov's hyperbolic and positive Cheeger isoperimetric constant. The results are used to generalize the results in [the authors, Commun. Contemp. Math. 20, No. 5, Article ID 1750050, 33 p. (2018; Zbl 1398.53047)]. In the paper, a pole in a point at a geodesic metric space means that there exists \(m>0\) such that each point in the metric space lies in an \(m\)-neighborhood of some geodesic ray that emanates from the point.
