Abstract: Let be a general curve of genus g embedded via a general linear series of degree d in P^r. The well-known Maximal Rank Conjecture asserts that the restriction maps H^0(O_{P^r}(m)) o H^0(O_C(m) are of maximal rank; if known, this conjecture would determine the Hilbert function of C. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement for the hyperplane sections of unions general curves. More specifically, if H is a general hyperplane, we show that H^0(O_H(m)) o H^0(O_{(C_1 cup C_2 cup cdots cup C_n) cap H}(m)) is of maximal rank, except for some counterexamples when m = 2. As explained in arXiv:1809.05980, this result plays a key role in the author's proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture.

Fix a hyperplane \(H\subset \mathbb {P}^r\), \(r\ge 3\), and an irreducible family \(\Gamma\) of curves \(C\subset \mathbb{P}^r\) transversal to \(C\). For each \(C\in \Gamma\) the set \(S:= C\cap H\) has an interesting Hilbert function and the game is to compute it when \(C\) is general in \(\Gamma\). \(S\) is said to have maximal rank if all restriction maps \(H^0(\mathcal {O}_H(t)) \to H^0(\mathcal {O}_S(t))\) are either injective or surjective, i.e. if \(h^0(\mathcal {I}_{S,H}(t)) = \max\{\binom{r+t-1}{r-1} -\#S,0\}\) for all \(t>0\). This is an important property of \(\Gamma\) and it is proved here when \(\Gamma\) is the component of the Hilbert schemes of smooth curves of \(\mathbb{P}^r\) with gived degree \(d\) and genus \(g\) and general moduli. The same holds for disjoint unions of elements of \(\Gamma\) (except for a few exceptional cases with \(t=2\)) and this added generality was crucial for his proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture for curves with general moduli ([\textit{E. Larson}, ``The maximal rank conjecture, Preprint, \url{arXiv:1711.04906}; ``Degenerations of curves in projective space and the maximal rank conjecture, Preprint, \url{arXiv:1809.05980}].
