Abstract: Let pi1:mathcalXoDelta be a flat family of smooth, projective curves of genus gge2, degenerating to an irreducible nodal curve X0 with exactly one node. Fix an invertible sheaf mathcalL on mathcalX of relative odd degree. Let pi2:mathcalG(2,mathcalL)oDelta be the relative Gieseker moduli space of rank 2 semi-stable vector bundles with determinant mathcalL over mathcalX. Since pi2 is smooth over Delta∗, there exists a canonical family widetildehoi:mathbfJmathcalG(2,mathcalL)Delta∗ioDelta∗ of i-th intermediate Jacobians i.e., for all tinDelta∗, (widetildehoi)−1(t) is the i-th intermediate Jacobian of pi2−1(t). There exist different N'{e}ron models overlinehoi:overlinemathbfJmathcalG(2,mathcalL)ioDelta extending widetildehoi to the entire disc Delta, constructed by Clemens, Saito, Schnell, Zucker and Green-Griffiths-Kerr. In this article, we prove that in our setup, the N'{e}ron model overlinehoi is canonical in the sense that the different N'{e}ron models coincide and is an analytic fiber space which graphs admissible normal functions. We also show that for 1leilemax2,g−1, the central fiber of overlinehoi is a fibration over product of copies of Jk(mathrmJac(widetildeX0)) for certain values of k, where widetildeX0 is the normalization of X0. In particular, for gge5 and i=2,3,4, the central fiber of overlinehoi is a semi-abelian variety. Furthermore, we prove that the i-th generalized intermediate Jacobian of the (singular) central fibre of pi2 is a fibration over the central fibre of the N'{e}ron model overlinemathbfJmathcalG(2,mathcalL)i. In fact, for i=2 the fibration is an isomorphism.

Given a family \(X\) of smooth curves degenerating to a one-nodal curve \(X_0\), one can consider the Gieseker moduli space \(\mathcal{G}_{X_t}(2,\mathcal{L} _t)\) of semistable vector bundles of rank two and a determinant of odd degree which also varies in a family. For every smooth curve \(X_t\) in the family, one can consider the intermediate Jacobian \(J^i(\mathcal{G}_{X_t}(2,\mathcal{L} _t))\), and all these intermediate Jacobians fit together in one analytic family. To extend this at \(t=0\), different Neron models, constructed Clemens, Saito, Schnell, Zucker and Green-Griffiths-Kerr, are available. In this paper, the authors prove that all these Neron models coincide, and, moreover, they give a description of the special fiber and they prove that it is a semi-abelian varieties in some cases. In particular, in the case of the second intermediate Jacobian, the special fiber is isomorphic to the second generalized intermediate Jacobian of \(\mathcal{G}_{X_0}(2,\mathcal{L}_0)\).
