Abstract: A real toric space is a topological space which admits a well-behaved mathbbZ2k-action. Real moment-angle complexes and real toric varieties are typical examples of real toric spaces. A real toric space is determined by a pair of a simplicial complex K and a characteristic matrix Lambda. In this paper, we provide an explicit R-cohomology ring formula of a real toric space in terms of K and Lambda, where R is a commutative ring with unity in which 2 is a unit. Interestingly, it has a natural (mathbbZoplusoperatorname∗rowLambda)-grading. As corollaries, we compute the cohomology rings of (generalized) real Bott manifolds in terms of binary matroids, and we also provide a criterion for real toric spaces to be cohomology symplectic.

The present authors study the ring structure of the cohomology of real toric spaces. A real toric space is the quotient space of a real moment-angle complex, which is completely determined by a simplicial complex \(K\) with \(m\) vertices and a characteristic matrix \(\Lambda: \mathbb{Z}_2^m\longrightarrow\mathbb{Z}_2^n\) as a coloring on \(m\) vertices of \(K\). In their previous paper [\textit{S. Choi} and \textit{H. Park}, Forum Math. 29, No. 3, 543--553 (2017; Zbl 1377.57022)], they gave a description for the additive decomposition of the cohomology groups of a real toric space in terms of the reduced cohomology groups of subcomplexes of \(K\) determined by all rows of \(\Lambda\). The authors in the present paper extend their arguments to the ring structure of the cohomology of a real toric space, and obtain an explicit description of the cohomology ring of a real toric space in terms of \(K\) and \(\Lambda\). Some further applications are also given, including the description of \(R\)-cohomology rings of generalized real Bott manifolds and a criterion for real toric spaces to be cohomologically symplectic.
