Let \(\Omega\) be a domain in \(\mathbb R^n\), \(s\in(0,1)\), and let \(q:\Omega\to[1,\infty)\), \(p:\Omega\times\Omega\to[1,\infty)\) be continuous functions. Let \(L^{q(\cdot)}(\Omega)\) be the variable exponent Sobolev space endowed with the Luxemburg-type norm \(\|u\|_{q(\cdot)}=\inf\{\lambda>0:\int_\Omega |u(x)/\lambda|^{q(x)}\,dx\le1\}\). The authors extend the results on density of smooth functions to the case of the variable exponent analogue of the fractional Sobolev spaces \(W^{s,q(\cdot),p(\cdot,\cdot)}(\Omega)\) consisting of functions \(u\in L^{q(\cdot)}(\Omega)\) with the finite norm \(\|u\|_{s,q(\cdot),p(\cdot,\cdot)}=\|u\|_{q(\cdot)}+\inf\{\lambda>0:\int_\Omega\int_\Omega |u(x)-u(y)|^{p(x,y)}/(\lambda^{p(x,y)}|x-y|^{n+sp(x,y)})\,dxdy\le1\}<\infty\).
