Homology and homotopy groups of mapping spaces at large primes
Let \(X\) be a 1-reduced CW-complex of finite type, \(\dim(X)=n\) and integral homology torsion free. (1) Let \(n<2p\), \(p\) a prime. Then, after localization at \(p\) the suspension \(\Sigma X\) is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. (2) If \(Y\) is an \(r\)-reduced CW-complex of finite type and \(r>n+1\), then after localization of \(p\) the space of based maps \(\text{Map}(\Sigma X,Y)\) is homotopy equivalent to a product of iterated loop spaces of \(Y\). (3) Using (2) and above all earlier work (on Lusternik-Schnirelmann- category, elliptic Hopf algebras etc.) the authors show \(\text{cat(Map}(\Sigma X,Y))=\infty\), in case \(X,Y\) are noncontractible.
