Abstract: Let G be a finite group written multiplicatively. By a sequence over G, we mean a finite sequence of terms from G which is unordered, repetition of terms allowed, and we say that it is a product-one sequence if its terms can be ordered so that their product is the identity element of G. The small Davenport constant mathsfd(G) is the maximal integer ell such that there is a sequence over G of length ell which has no nontrivial, product-one subsequence. The large Davenport constant mathsfD(G) is the maximal length of a minimal product-one sequence---this is a product-one sequence which cannot be factored into two nontrivial, product-one subsequences. It is easily observed that mathsfd(G)+1leqmathsfD(G), and if G is abelian, then equality holds. However, for non-abelian groups, these constants can differ significantly. Now suppose G has a cyclic, index 2 subgroup. Then an old result of Olson and White (dating back to 1977) implies that mathsfd(G)=frac12|G| if G is non-cyclic, and mathsfd(G)=|G|−1 if G is cyclic. In this paper, we determine the large Davenport constant of such groups, showing that mathsfD(G)=mathsfd(G)+|G′|, where G′=[G,G]leqG is the commutator subgroup of G.

For a finite group \(G\) one defines the \textit{large Davenport constant} \(D(G)\) as the maximal length of a sequence of elements of \(G\) with unit product, not containing a proper subsequence with unit product, and the \textit{small Davenport constant} \(d(G)\) as the maximal length of a sequence of elements of \(G\) not containing any subsequence with unit product. One has always \(d(G)+1\leq D(G)\leq |G|\), and for \(G\) Abelian one has \(D(G)=d(G)+1\). The authors prove that if \(G\) has a cyclic subgroup of index \(2\), then \(D(G)=d(G)+|G'|\), where \(G'\) is the commutator subgroup of \(G\). Since it is known [\textit{J. E. Olson} and \textit{E. T. White}, Number Theory and Algebra; Collect. Pap. dedic. H. B. Mann, A. E. Ross, O. Taussky-Todd, 215-222 (1977; Zbl 0368.05009)] that in this case one has \(d(G)=|G|-1\) for cyclic \(G\), and \(d(G)=|G|/2\) for non-cyclic \(G\), a formula for \(D(G)\) follows.
