Abstract: We present a novel approach to the construction of new finite algebras and describe the congruence lattices of these algebras. Given a finite algebra (B0,dots), let B1,B2,dots,BK be sets that either intersect B0 or intersect each other at certain points. We construct an emph{overalgebra} (A,FA), by which we mean an expansion of (B0,dots) with universe A=B0cupB1cupcdotscupBK, and a certain set FA of unary operations that includes mappings ei satisfying ei2=ei and ei(A)=Bi, for 0leqileqK. We explore two such constructions and prove results about the shape of the new congruence lattices Con(A,FA) that result. Thus, descriptions of some new classes of finitely representable lattices is one contribution of this paper. Another, perhaps more significant contribution is the announcement of a novel approach to the discovery of new classes of representable lattices, the full potential of which we have only begun to explore.

The paper deals with algebraic lattices which can be (up to isomorphism) represented as congruence lattices of finite algebras -- they are said to be finitely representable. Grätzer and Schmidt showed that each algebraic lattice is a congruence lattice of some (not necessarily finite) algebra. The authors do not solve but contribute to the solution of the problem of finite representability of lattices. Their main results are two constructions -- any of them describes a procedure how, to a given finite algebra \(B\) (with known \(\text{Con} B\)), to find a finite overalgebra \(A\) possessing unary operations only, and then properties of \(\text{Con} A\) are studied. The procedure yields the new finitely representable lattice \(\text{Con} A\), hence new classes of finitely representable lattices are described.
