The author considers abstract symmetric variational eigenvalue problems on a composite bounded manifold \(X \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}\) with \(n \in \{2,3\}\). The manifold is assumed to be the union of submanifolds of dimension less or equal \(3\). The submanifolds have sufficiently smooth boundaries and manifolds of the same dimension intersect at most in their boundary. An example of such a manifold is given by a domain containing a tip with zero interior angle. Composite manifolds play an important role when dealing, e.g. in elasticity, with structures that are formed by materials of different types, for example a structure stabilized by a skeleton. The author introduces function spaces on \(X\) corresponding to the standard Sobolev spaces \(H^1(\Omega)\) and \(H^2(\Omega)\) with \(\Omega\) a domain in \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\). These spaces are obtained by imposing certain compatibility conditions involving the traces across common parts of the boundaries of the submanifolds. Certain abstract eigenvalue problems are studied in these new spaces with assumptions imposed that lead to Hilbert-Schmidt operators. The continuous dependence of eigenvalues on a certain parameter in the variational problem is also proved.
