Kauffman introduced a state model to calculate the Jones Polynomial via the Kauffman bracket by smoothing crossings in a link diagram until the diagram reduces to a disjoint union of circles [\textit{L. H. Kauffman}, Topology 26, 395--407 (1987; Zbl 0622.57004)]. In this paper the author reconstructs the Alexander Conway polynomial via a state model using a new kind of smoothing on \((1,1)\) tangle diagrams that decompose into a disjoint union of framed circles and a framed path.
