Abstract: In this paper, we study the following conjecture of Hamilton: Any compact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton with positive curvature operator must be Einstein. We first derive several identities. Then we show that the conjecture is true under an additional condition. Furthermore, such a soliton must be of constant curvature.
The author in the first place derives a number of useful identities on a gradient shrinking Ricci soliton, that are then used to show that if a compact gradient shrinking soliton admits a Riemannian metric with positive curvature operator and satisfies a certain inequality, then it must be Einstein and, furthermore, must be of constant curvature.
