\(E\) sei ein reeller Banachraum. Die Gesamtheit der Paare \(\{x, y\}\) von Elementen aus \(E\) bildet einen komplexen Paarraum \(E'(c)\), wenn gesetzt wird 1) \(\{x_1, y_1\}= \{x_2,y_2\}\) dann und nur dann, wenn \(x_1 = x_2\), \(y_1 = y_2\), 2) \(\{x_1, y_1\} + \{x_2, y_2\} = \{x_1 + x_2, y_1+y_2\}\), 3) \((a + ib) \{x, y\} = \{ax - by, bx + ay\}\) für \(a, b\) reell, 4) \(||\{x, y\}|| = \sup\limits_{||l||=1} (l^2(x) + l^2(y))^{\frac12}\), \(l\) in \(\overline E\). \(E'(c)\) ist für jedes \(E\) ein komplexer Banachraum. Notwendig und hinreichend dafür, daß ein komplexer Banachraum \(B\) ein komplexer Paarraum ist, ist die Existenz einer Funktion \(\overline Z\), die auf den Elementen \(Z\) von \(B\) erklärt ist und Werte in \(B\) hat mit folgenden Eigenschaften: \[ 1)\quad \overline{Z_1 + Z_2} = \overline{Z}_1 + \overline{Z}_2,\quad 2)\quad \overline{iZ}=-i\overline{Z},\quad 3)\quad \overline{\overline{Z}} = Z,\quad 4)\quad ||\overline{Z}|| = ||Z||. \]
