Abstract: Denote by the numerical radius of a matrix . An elementary proof is given to the fact that for a pair of commuting matrices of order two, and characterization is given for the matrix pairs that attain the quality.
This work is devoted to an elementary proof of the submultiplicativity of the numerical radius of commuting matrices of order two. With this simple proof the authors easily obtain the known characterization of pairs of matrices which give the equality \(w(AB)=w(A) w(B)\), \(w\) being the numerical radius and \(A,B\) two matrices.
