Let G be a group of Lie type of Lie rank \(\ell\) over the finite field K of characteristic p. \textit{R. Steinberg} [Can. J. Math. 14, 277-283 (1962; Zbl 0103.262)] showed that G is generated by two elements. In theorem 1 the author proves that for \(\ell \geq 3\) the group G is generated by two elements whose orders depend only on p and \(\ell\), but depend not on \(| K:GF(p)|\) as by R. Steinberg. In theorem 2 for \(\ell \geq 3\) and \(p=2\) pairs of generating elements of G are indicated, one of which is a involution. The proofs of theorem 1 and 2 are based on the description of subgroups of G which have nontrivial intersection with all root subgroups of G obtained by \textit{V. M. Levchuk} [Algebra Logika 22, 421-434, 504-517 (1983; Zbl 0542.20027, Zbl 0668.20037)] and by the author [Algebra Logika 22, 526-541 (1983; Zbl 0544.20040) and Mat. Zametki 36, 149-158 (1984; Zbl 0561.20034)].
