Über die Mittel von orthogonalen Funktionen. V. (On the means of orthogonal functions. V)

Denote by \(\Omega\) the class of all double orthonormal systems \(\phi =\{\phi_{jk}(x):\;j,k=1,2,...\}\) on the interval (0,1). Let \(\lambda =\{\lambda_{mn}:\;m,n=1,2,...\}\) be a double sequence of positive numbers, nondecreasing in m and n, and such that \(\lambda_{mn}\to \infty\) as \(\max (m,n)\to \infty.\) Given a double sequence \(\{a_{jk}\}\) of real numbers, define \[ \sigma_{mn}(a;\phi;x):=\lambda^{- 1}_{mn}\sum^{m}_{j=1}\sum^{n}_{k=1}a_{jk}\phi_{jk}(x). \] The following theorem is proved: (i) If \[ \| a\|:=\sup_{\phi \in \Omega}(\int^{1}_{0}\sup_{m,n\geq 1}\sigma^ 2_{mn}(a;\phi;x)dx)^{1/2}<\infty, \] then, for all \(\phi\in \Omega\), the means \(\sigma_{mn}(a;\phi;x)\) converge to zero as \(\max (m,n)\to \infty\) for almost all x. (ii) If \(\| a\| =\infty,\) then there exists a system \(\Phi\in \Omega\) of step functions such that \(\limsup | \sigma_{mn}(a;\Phi;x)| =\infty\) as \(\min (m,n)\to \infty\) for almost all x.
