The authors apply homogenization tools to a problem occurring within the context of acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals. They consider a 1D unbounded domain \(R\) and the balance of momentum \(\sigma _{,x}-p_{,t}=0\), where \(\sigma \) represents the scalar Cauchy stress, \(p\) the momentum density, \(x\) the spatial coordinate and \(t\) the time. The authors introduce the linear constitutive equations \(\sigma =C_{m}(x)u_{,x}\) and \(p=\rho _{m}(x)u_{,t}\), the elasticity modulus \(C_{m}(x)\) and the mass density being periodic of period \(l\), which is the characteristic lattice constant of the 1D domain. On the two extremities of a finite subdomain \(\Omega \subset R\) consisting of \(N_{\text{cells}}\) unit cells, they add either traction or displacement boundary conditions \(\sigma (x_{s},t)=\sigma ^{\prime }(x_{s},t)=0\) or \(u(x_{p},t)=u^{\prime }(x_{p},t)=0\).\ They then introduce the Floquet-Bloch transform \(\mathcal{F}_{B}\) on \(\mathcal{L}^{2}(R)\) and its inverse that they apply to derive the homogenized macro-scale equations for the preceding problem. They here work in \(R\) and they use the Gauss divergence theorem. The authors derive the macro-scale traction and displacement boundary conditions. They introduce a plane-wave expansion of the homogenized equations to distinguish between the primary and spurious solutions to these homogenized equations. They build a weak form of the generalized macro-scale equations which allows to present a numerical dispersion analysis of the macro-scale equations, through the discrete Fourier transform. The end of the paper discusses results of this numerical analysis applied to some examples.
