Abstract: Denote by the -stable closure of the class of all metrizable spaces, i.e., is the smallest class of topological spaces that contains and is closed under taking subspaces, homeomorphic images, countable topological sums, countable Tychonoff products, and function spaces with Lindel"of domain. We show that the class coincides with the class of all topological spaces homeomorphic to subspaces of the function spaces with a separable metrizable space and a metrizable space . We say that a topological space is Ascoli if every compact subset of is evenly continuous; by the Ascoli Theorem, each -space is Ascoli. We prove that the class properly contains the class of all Ascoli -spaces and is properly contained in the class of -spaces, recently introduced by Gabriyelyan and Kk{a}kol. Consequently, an Ascoli space embeds into the function space for suitable separable metrizable spaces and if and only if is an -space.
