Closure preserving properties of C_k(metric fan)

Let \(C_k(Z)\) be the space of continuous real valued functions on a regular \(T_1\)-space \(Z\) with the compact open topology. The authors seek to find in \(C_k(Z)\) a counterexample to a long standing conjecture that the property \(M_3\) of being a stratifiable space implies the property \(M_1\) of having a \(\sigma\)-closure preserving base. Let \(F= (\omega\times\omega)\cup\{\infty\}\) denote the countable metric fan, where all points of \(F\setminus\{\infty\}\) are isolated, and basic open sets about \(\infty\) have the form \((U\times\omega)\cup\{\infty\}\) where \(U\subset\omega\) is cofinite. They show, among other things, that \(C_k(F)\) has properties \(M_1\) and \(M_3\), and that \(C_k(F)\) can be embedded in the countable product of paracompact \(F_\sigma\)-metrizable spaces. Some further open questions are raised.
