Abstract: Let G be a compact connected Lie group and p:EoSigmaA be a principal G-bundle with a characteristic map alpha:AoG, where A=SigmaA0 for some A0. Let KioFi1hookrightarrowFi,|,1leilen,,F0=ast;F1=SigmaK1;extand;FnsimeqG be a cone-decomposition of G of length m and F'1=SigmaK'1subsetF1 with K'1subsetK1 which satisfy FiF'1subsetFi+1 up to homotopy for any i. Our main result is as follows: we have operatornamecat(X)lem+1, if firstly the characteristic map alpha is compressible into F'1, secondly the Berstein-Hilton Hopf invariant H1(alpha) vanishes in [A,OmegaF'1astOmegaF'1] and thirdly Km is a sphere. We apply this to the principal bundle mathrmSO(9)hookrightarrowmathrmSO(10)oS9 to determine L-S category of mathrmSO(10).
