Abstract: For a topological space and an ideal of subsets of we introduce the notion of connectedness modulo . This notion of connectedness naturally generalizes the notion of connectedness in its usual sense. In the case when is completely regular, we introduce a subspace of the Stone--v{C}ech compactification of , such that connectedness modulo is equivalent to connectedness of . In particular, we prove that when is the ideal generated by the collection of all open subspaces of with pseudocompact closure, then is connected modulo if and only if is connected, and when is normal and is the ideal generated by the collection of all closed realcompact subspaces of , then is connected modulo if and only if is connected. Here is the Hewitt realcompactification of .
