Abstract: If g is a map from a space X into mathbbRm and q is an integer, let Bq,d,m(g) be the set of all lines PidsubsetmathbbRm such that |g1(Pid)|geqq. Let also mathcalH(q,d,m,k) denote the maps gcolonXomathbbRm such that dimBq,d,m(g)leqk. We prove that for any n-dimensional metric compactum X each of the sets mathcalH(3,1,m,3n+1m) and mathcalH(2,1,m,2n) is dense and Gdelta in the function space C(X,mathbbRm) provided mgeq2n+1 (in this case mathcalH(3,1,m,3n+1m) and mathcalH(2,1,m,2n) can consist of embeddings). The same is true for the sets mathcalH(1,d,m,n+d(md))subsetC(X,mathbbRm) if mgeqn+d, and mathcalH(4,1,3,0)subsetC(X,mathbbR3) if dimXleq1.
