Let \(q\) be an integer \(>1\) and let \(R\) be an integral domain. Let \(R^\infty_{(q)}\) be the subring of the Cartesian product \(\prod^\infty_{i=1}R\), defined by \[ R^\infty_{(q)}=\{(r_1,\dots,r_{q^n},r_1,\dots,r_{q^n},\dots)\in\prod^\infty_{i=1}R\mid n\geq 0\}. \] The main result of the paper under review is the following (Theorem 2.1): Let \(G\) be an abelian group such that \(G=\bigcup^\infty_{i=1}G_n\) for some chain of subgroups \(G_1\subset G_2\subset\dots\). Suppose that, for each \(n\), the following conditions hold: \(|G_n|=q^n\), a primitive \(q^n\)-th root of 1 is contained in \(R\) and \(q\) is a unit of \(R\). Then the group algebra \(RG\) and \(R^\infty_{(q)}\) are isomorphic as \(R\)-algebras. This theorem is a generalization of a classical result of \textit{G. Higman} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 46, 231-248 (1940; Zbl 0025.24302)].
