It is well known that investigations of groups factorized by two subgroups often lead to the consideration of triply factorized groups of the form \(G=AB=AM=BM\) where \(A\), \(B\) and \(M\) are subgroups of the group \(G\) and \(M\) is normal in \(G\). It turns out that there are many situations in which this group \(G\) satisfies some nilpotency condition if the three subgroups \(A\), \(B\) and \(M\) satisfy the same nilpotency condition. For instance, if \(G\) is finite and \(A\), \(B\) and \(M\) are nilpotent, then \(G\) is nilpotent by a result of \textit{O. H. Kegel} [Math. Z. 87, 42-48 (1965; Zbl 0123.02503)]. Likewise, if \(M\) is a minimax group or if \(G\) has finite abelian section rank, then the local nilpotency of \(A\), \(B\) and \(M\) implies that of \(G\) by a result of \textit{B. Amberg, S. Franciosi} and \textit{F. de Giovanni} [Bull. Aust. Math. Soc. 37, 69-79 (1988; Zbl 0629.20011)]. A basic result of the article under review extends these last results to the case when the normal subgroup \(M\) has an ascending \(G\)-invariant series with minimax factors. As a corollary, it follows that the FC-hypercentral group \(G=AB=AM=BM\) with the hypercentral subgroups \(A\), \(B\) and \(M\) is in fact hypercentral, that gives a positive answer to a question of \textit{B. Amberg, S. Franciosi} and \textit{F. de Giovanni} [Forum Math. 7, No. 3, 307-316 (1995; Zbl 0823.20032)]. It is also noted that the basic result cannot be extended to the case when \(M\) has finite Prüfer rank.
