Abstract: Let mathcalOsubsetmathbbRd a bounded domain of class C1,1. In L2(mathcalO;mathbbCn), we consider a self-adjoint matrix strongly elliptic second order differential operator BD,varepsilon, 0<varepsilonleqslant1, with the Dirichlet boundary condition. The coefficients of the operator BD,varepsilon are periodic and depend on mathbfx/varepsilon. We are interested in the behavior of the operators cos(tBD,varepsilon1/2) and BD,varepsilon1/2sin(tBD,varepsilon1/2), tinmathbbR, in the small period limit. For these operators, approximations in the norm of operators acting from some subspace mathcalH of the Sobolev space H4(mathcalO;mathbbCn) to L2(mathcalO;mathbbCn) are found. Moreover, for BD,varepsilon1/2sin(tBD,varepsilon1/2), the approximation with the corrector in the norm of operators acting from mathcalHsubsetH4(mathcalO;mathbbCn) to H1(mathcalO;mathbbCn) is obtained. The results are applied to homogenization for the solution of the first initial-boundary value problem for the hyperbolic equation partialt2mathbfuvarepsilon=BD,varepsilonmathbfuvarepsilon.
