Abstract: For any prime number and field , we characterize the -retract rationality of an algebraic -torus in terms of its character lattice. We show that a -torus is retract rational if and only if it is -retract rational for every prime , and that the Noether problem for retract rationality for a group of multiplicative type has an affirmative answer for if and only if the Noether problem for -retract rationality for have a positive answer for all . For every finite set of primes we give examples of tori that are -retract rational if and only if .
