Abstract: We consider Chebyshev polynomials, Tn(z), for infinite, compact sets frakesubsetmathbbR (that is, the monic polynomials minimizing the sup-norm, VertTnVertfrake, on frake). We resolve a 45+ year old conjecture of Widom that for finite gap subsets of mathbbR, his conjectured asymptotics (which we call SzegH{o}-Widom asymptotics) holds. We also prove the first upper bounds of the form VertTnVertfrakeleqQC(frake)n (where C(frake) is the logarithmic capacity of frake) for a class of frake's with an infinite number of components, explicitly for those frakesubsetmathbbR that obey a Parreau-Widom condition.
