Abstract: Let K be a non-polar compact subset of mathbbR and muK denote the equilibrium measure of K. Furthermore, let Pnleft(cdot,muKight) be the n-th monic orthogonal polynomial for muK. It is shown that |Pnleft(cdot,muKight)|L2(muK), the Hilbert norm of Pnleft(cdot,muKight) in L2(muK), is bounded below by mathrmCap(K)n for each ninmathbbN. A sufficient condition is given for displaystyleleft(|Pnleft(cdot;muKight)|L2(muK)/mathrmCap(K)night)n=1infty to be unbounded. More detailed results are presented for sets which are union of finitely many intervals.
