The author considers a comparison of visual patterns. Two figures can be compared by superposing one on the other so that their geometric mismatch is minimal. This problem cannot be solved by inspection, since the set of the relative positions of the two figures is continual. The problem is solved by a finite procedure through geometric construction or reduction to a certain set of equations.
