In the paper under review the authors study the asymptotics for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and the corresponding Green function for sequences of Riemannian metrics that converge to a smooth compact limit in a controlled manner. A model for this type of phenomenon is the degeneration of the Bergman metric on a sequence of compact Riemann surfaces tending to a reducible limit.
