Abstract: We find a necessary condition for the existence of an action of a Lie group G by quaternionic automorphisms on an integrable quaternionic manifold in terms of representations of mathfrakg. We check this condition and prove that a Riemannian symmetric space of dimension 4n for ngeq2 has an invariant integrable almost quaternionic structure if and only if it is quaternionic vector space, quaternionic hyperbolic space or quaternionic projective space.

The author studies \(G\)-homogeneous spaces \(M^{4n}=G/H\) with a \(G\)-invariant almost quaternionic structure. A Riemannian manifold \(M\) of dimension \(4n\) with \(n \ge 2\) is quaternion-Kähler if its holonomy group is contained in \(\mathrm{Sp}(n) \cdot \mathrm{Sp}(1)\). A quaternion-Kähler symmetric space is a Riemannian symmetric space that is quaternion-Kähler. The author proves that a quaternion-Kähler symmetric space is integrable if and only if it is a quaternionic vector space \(\mathbb{H}^n\), a quaternionic hyperbolic space \(H^n_{\mathbb{H}}\) or a quaternionic projective space \(\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{H}^{n+1})\).
