Abstract: Let L be a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra and d be the minimal number generators for L/Z(L). It is known that dimL/Z(L)=ddimL2−t(L) for an integer t(L)geq0. In this paper, we classify all finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras L when t(L)inlbrace0,1,2brace. We find also a construction, which shows that there exist Lie algebras of arbitrary t(L).

Let $L$ be a nilpotent Lie algebra of dimension $n$. Classifying such algebras with extra conditions is quite popular. It is known that $\dim L/Z(L)=d(L/Z(L))\dim(L^2)-t(L)$ for some non-negative integer $t(L)$ and $d(L/Z(L))$ is the minimum number of generators for $L/Z(L)$. The authors find all the algebras when $t(L)$ is 0,1 or 2. Let $A(n)$ and $H(m)$ be the abelian Lie algebra of dimension $n$ and the Heisenberg Lie algebra of dimension $2m+1$. They find that $t(L)=0$ if and only if $L$ is isomorphic to $A(n)$ for all $n\geq 1$ or $H(m)\bigoplus A(n-2m-1)$ for all $m\geq 1$. Also $t(L)=1$ if and only if $L$ is isomorphic to $A(n-4)\bigoplus L_{4,3}$ for all $n\geq 4$ and $L_{4,3}=\langle x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4\rangle$ where $[x_1,x_2]=x_3$ and $[x_1,x_3]=x_4$. A similar result holds for $t(L)=2$, but now there are three families much like the one in the $t(L)=1$ case. Then it is shown that there are examples which hold for $t(L)=n$ for every $n\geq 0$.
