If \(L\) is a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra of nilpotency class \(c \ge 2\) and dimension \(n \ge 1\) (over an arbitrary field) with derived subalgebra \(\gamma_2 (L)\) of dimension \(m \ge 1\) and central ideal \(Z(L)\) such that the dimension of the quotient \(Z(L)/(Z(L)\cap \gamma_2(L))\) is equal to \(t \ge 1\), it is possible to improve in several ways a classical restriction due to \textit{P. Niroomand} and \textit{F. G. Russo} [Commun. Algebra 39, No. 4, 1293--1297 (2011; Zbl 1250.17019)] on the Schur multiplier \(M(L)\) of \(L\). Of course, the restrictions on \(M(L)\) may be given numerically in terms of arithmetic functions which depend on \(n,m,c\) and \(t\), but the precise analytic expression of the bounds (and their optimality) require some delicate computations. These are presented in the main results, namely Theorems A, B and C, which also offer some important conditions of classification for finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebras.
