Let \(L\) be a finite-dimensional Lie algebra and let \(Z(L)\) be its center. Let \(\operatorname{Der}(L)\) be the space generated by all the derivations of \(L\) and let \(\operatorname{Inn}(L)\) be the space generated by all the inner derivations of \(L\). The authors consider the following spaces: \begin{align*} \operatorname{Der}_z(L)&=\{D \in\operatorname{Der}(L)\mid\,\operatorname{Im}(D) \subset Z(L)\},\\ C^{\ast}(L)&=\{D \in \operatorname{Der}_z(L)\mid Z(L) \subset \operatorname{Ker}(D)\},\\ Z(\operatorname{Inn}(L))&=\{D \in\operatorname{Der}_z(L)\mid D\, \text{ is inner}\,\}. \end{align*} The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions for a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra \(L\) of class two so that \(C^{\ast}(L)=\operatorname{Der}_z(L)\). In addition, the authors give a characterization for a finite dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra \(L\) of dimension at most eight for which \(C^{\ast}(L)\) is minimal but \(\operatorname{Der}_z(L)\) is not minimal, or equivalently: \[ Z(\operatorname{Inn}(L))=C^{\ast}(L)\subset\operatorname{Der}_z(L).\tag{1} \] Finally, the authors prove that there is no nilpotent Lie algebra of at most dimension seven satisfying (1) and that a non abelian nilpotent Lie algebra \(L\) of dimension eight satisfies (1) if and only if \(\dim Z(L)=2\), \(\dim [L,L]=5\) and the nilpotency class of \(L\) is three.
