Abstract: We study the (n1)-dimensional volume of central hyperplane sections of the n-dimensional cube, Qn. Our main goal is two-fold: first, we prove that the volume of the section perpendicular to the main diagonal of the cube is locally maximal for every ngeq4. Then, we derive that non-diagonal critical central sections exist in all such dimensions. The crux of the proofs is an estimate on the rate of decay of the Laplace-P'olya integral Jn(r)=intinftyinftymathrmsincntcdotcos(rt),mathrmdt that is proven by a combinatorial argument. This also yields improved bounds for Eulerian numbers of the first kind.
