Abstract: Let hocolonGomathrmGL2(K) be a continuous representation of a compact group G over a complete discretely valued field K, ring of integers mathcalO and uniformiser pi. We prove that operatornametrho is reducible modulo pin if and only if ho is reducible modulo pin. More precisely, there exist characters chi1,chi2colonGo(mathcalO/pinmathcalO)imes such that det(tho(g))equiv(tchi1(g))(tchi2(g))pmodpin for all ginG, if and only if there exists a G-stable lattice LambdasubsetK2 such that Lambda/pinLambda contains a G-invariant, free, rank 1 mathcalO/pinmathcalO-submodule. This answers a question of Bella"iche--Chenevier. As an application, we prove an optimal version of Ribet's Lemma, which gives a condition for the existence of a G-stable lattice Lambda that realises a non-split extension of chi2 by chi1.
