Abstract: In this paper, we study homological representations of mapping class groups. Given a finite group G acting on a surface S, we consider the question of whether the representation of extrmMod(S)G given by the action on H1(S;mathbbQ) has arithmetic image. This question has been answered both positively and negatively in different cases by the work of several authors. Our main result is a complete answer to this question when S has genus at most 3.
