Homological representations of low genus mapping class groups

Abstract: In this paper, we study homological representations of mapping class groups. Given a finite group $G$ acting on a surface $S$, we consider the question of whether the representation of $extrmMod(S{)}^G$ given by the action on $H_1(S;mathbbQ)$ has arithmetic image. This question has been answered both positively and negatively in different cases by the work of several authors. Our main result is a complete answer to this question when $S$ has genus at most 3.
